One of the three ways to Prevent Child Abuse That Are Basically Free

Although Cambodia’s cities continue to grow, about 82 percent of the Country’s population still lives in rural areas. Village life is harsh, and most families do not have access to basic facilities. Sao Sary Foundation has been serving the poorest children, their families, and communities for 16 years now. So far, 8,400 Cambodian poorest families have directly impacted our family sponsorships.

SSF recognized that providing families with the support and skills to become self-sufficient reduces the likelihood that they will withdraw their children from school and send them to work. This is why family sponsorship is the appropriate intervention in some cases. In each case, the goal of family sponsorship is to ensure that by the second year the parents, parent or grandparent is able to support the family through a micro business or other income-generating activity.

What SSF does is help the family draft and implement a business plan and a household development plan, through financial training and coaching. In these cases, families make the transition from subsistence day labor or farming to year-round employment that allows them to save for the future or invest in their business or farms.

We provide initial grants of $75 to $1,250 in start-up capital. Once the business proves viable additional support is sometimes given to expand or upgrade services. In general, SSF does not provide cash to families directly, but helps draft a plan and then delivers the goods necessary to start a business. This is followed by technical support an weekly visits that create an channel for open discussion about the challenges and opportunities posed by a new business. Annual evaluations and audits are made so that both the family and SSF can measure the outcome of the project.

Family sponsorship is $40 per month, about $1.30 a day. This provides the family with access to clean water, nutritious food, vital health care, and improved housing. The funding also includes training and financial support for family business development. The number of families receiving sponsorship has risen from 10 in the previous reporting period to 8,400 currently. Click on https://ssf.give.asia/campaign/family-sponsorship to make a health center donation with your name and/or https://ssf.give.asia/fundraise/new  to sign up as a fundraiser for.

3 Ways To Prevent Child Abuse That Are Basically Free

Although Cambodia’s cities continue to grow, about 82 percent of the Country’s population still lives in rural areas. Village life is harsh, and most families do not have access to basic facilities. A poor family has at least three school-age children that they have to allocate at least $111 US dollars per child per year for having a bicycle, school uniforms, footwear, school bag, study materials and school supplies in addition to $192 US dollars as daily pocket money allocation while they can’t afford to cover all ongoing costs.

Cambodia has achieved a remarkably high net enrollment ratio (NER) for primary school (95%), although the NER falls precipitously for lower secondary (32%). Despite improvements in recent years in the areas of access and quality of education in Cambodia, dropout is still an issue.

Sao Sary Foundation has three types of sponsorship to the children: full, educational and partial. These go to children and youths who have been, or face the highest risk of being, trafficked or abused. Usually, they live in slum areas in the provincial capital or in villages where there are high rates of food insecurity and indebtedness. Village leaders and residents often assist our field staff in identifying those most at risk of trafficking. This process allows SSF to strengthen relations with communities and involves them in the process or reducing the risk of trafficking and exploitation. A risk assessment is made by our Child Protection team prior to selecting children for sponsorship. This involves discussions with family members as well as the child. Sponsored children and their families also sign a contract that clarifies in detail what they will receive and what is expected of them. Regular follow-up visits (sometimes weekly) are scheduled to ensure the family and child has the support they need to reach their goals.

Over the past year we have fine-tuned our sponsorship program to make it more flexible to sponsors as well as individuals and communities. The number children and youths receiving sponsorships increased from 45 in the last reporting period to 138 early this year. Our sponsors include individuals and groups from around the globe, and we encourage contact between them and the children and families they assist. We have three types of sponsorship: full, educational and partial.

Full sponsorships ($100 per month):

Full sponsorships ($100 per month): The number of children and youths receiving full sponsorships has risen to 56. These sponsorships cover all living and educational expenses as well as pocket money for children and youths who live at the Protection Center. Funding also helps support their biological or adoptive families whom we partner with and our Protection and Learning centers. Click on https://ssf.give.asia/campaign/sponsor-a-child to make a health center donation with your name and/or https://ssf.give.asia/fundraise/new to sign up as a fundraiser for.

Partial sponsorships ($35 per month):

SSF introduced partial sponsorships (for children and youths who live with their families) in 2006. These sponsorships allow the children and youths to remain in school, and include financial support for school fees and materials as well as food. Almost all of these, 86, go to girls.

Educational sponsorships ($18 per month):

Educational sponsorships (financial support for school fees and materials, including bicycles) have increased to 8400 this year. These sponsorships are making education possible for 8400 children who face a high risk of any form of child labour, trafficking and abuse. Click on https://ssf.give.asia/campaign/sponsor-a-child to make a health center donation with your name and/or https://ssf.give.asia/fundraise/new to sign up as a fundraiser for.

Crowdfunding For Pit Latrine: Checklist, Tips And Advice

Although Cambodia’s cities continue to grow, about 82 percent of the Country’s population still lives in rural areas. Village life is harsh, and most families do not have access to basic facilities. With a total population of 16.4 million, at least 12.6 million live in Cambodia’s rural areas, and have limited or poor access to clean water. In 2017, over 9.2 million have access to an improved water supply, but only 1 million rural households had piped water supply. While over half of these 1 million rural households have access to improved sanitation, the other half still practice open defecation.

In response to water, hygiene and sanitation issues in Cambodia, Sao Sary Foundation’s Major Accomplishments from 2006 – 2019 are the followings;

  1. 2,700 biosand filters were distributed,
  2. 43 new hand pump wells were built,
  3. Four broken hand pump wells were upgraded,
  4. 200 pit latrines were assisted to build,
  5. 54 first aid kits were distributed to village leaders and local authorities after learning First Aid Course from us,
  6.  6,651 hygiene kits were distributed to 6,651 schoolchildren who learnt with us how to wash their hands effectively through Singaporean handwash standard,
  7.  497 femine hygiene kits were distributed to 497 female teenagers who studied femine hygiene practice from Singaporean Nurses,
  8. A communal Hall and two health centers were built and refurbished

The SSF signature program aimed to provide 88,500 villagers in Cambodia with convenient access to clean drinking water through the installation of bio-sand filters (BSFs), borehole wells and latrines.  The multi-sectorial program increased the capacity of communities to adopt improved health and hygiene practices through basic hygiene training, feminine hygiene training and first aid training.  Improved healthcare services and facilities are also facilitated through the construction of a community hall and refurbishment of two health centres.

3 Powerful Ways to Prevent Child Abuse in Cambodia Through Education and Sponsorship

3 Powerful Ways to Prevent Child Abuse in Cambodia—That Cost Almost Nothing but Change Everything

In the heart of Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a country of vibrant culture, resilience, and hope. Yet behind the beauty of its temples and rice fields lies a sobering reality: millions of children in rural Cambodia remain vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and trafficking—often because their families simply cannot afford to keep them in school.

While Cambodia’s cities continue to grow, over 82% of the population still lives in rural areas, where access to basic services like education, healthcare, and child protection is limited. In these villages, life is harsh. Families often struggle to meet even the most basic needs, and children are the first to suffer.

But here’s the good news: you can help prevent child abuse—and it doesn’t take much.

At the Sao Sary Foundation (SSF), we’ve developed three powerful, low-cost sponsorship models that directly protect children from abuse and exploitation. These programs are not only effective—they’re also accessible to anyone who wants to make a difference.

Why Education Is the First Line of Defense Against Child Abuse

Education is more than a right—it’s a shield. When children stay in school, they are less likely to be trafficked, forced into labor, or subjected to abuse. But for many Cambodian families, education is a luxury they simply cannot afford.

A poor rural family with three school-age children must allocate at least $111 USD per child per year just for basic school needs: a bicycle, uniforms, shoes, a school bag, and study materials. Add to that $192 USD annually for daily pocket money, and the cost becomes overwhelming. Most families can’t cover these expenses, and children are forced to drop out.

While Cambodia has achieved a 95% net enrollment rate in primary school, that number plummets to just 32% for lower secondary school. The dropout rate is alarming—and it’s directly linked to increased vulnerability to abuse.

SSF’s Child Sponsorship Program: A Proven Model for Protection

To address this crisis, the Sao Sary Foundation offers three types of child sponsorships: full, partial, and educational. These programs are designed to support children who are most at risk—those living in slums, food-insecure villages, or families burdened by debt.

Our Child Protection Team works closely with village leaders and residents to identify children who face the highest risk of trafficking or abuse. Each child undergoes a thorough risk assessment, including interviews with family members. Once selected, the child and their family sign a sponsorship agreement that outlines mutual expectations and support.

Regular follow-up visits—sometimes weekly—ensure that each child receives the care, encouragement, and resources they need to thrive.

1. Full Sponsorship ($100/month): Total Protection and Care

Full sponsorships provide comprehensive support for children and youths who live at our Protection and Learning Centers. These children often have no safe home environment and are at immediate risk of abuse or exploitation.

Your $100 monthly donation covers:

  • Safe housing and nutritious meals

  • School fees, uniforms, and supplies

  • Pocket money for daily needs

  • Counseling and psychosocial support

  • Support for biological or adoptive families

As of this year, 56 children and youths are receiving full sponsorships. These are the most vulnerable members of our community—and your support gives them a second chance at life.

👉 or to multiply your impact.

2. Partial Sponsorship ($35/month): Keeping Families Together

Introduced in 2006, partial sponsorships are designed for children who live with their families but are at risk of dropping out of school due to financial hardship.

Your $35 monthly donation provides:

  • School fees and materials

  • Food support

  • Ongoing monitoring and mentorship

This model allows children to stay with their families while receiving the support they need to continue their education. Currently, 86 children—most of them girls—are benefiting from partial sponsorships.

Girls in rural Cambodia are especially vulnerable to early marriage, trafficking, and domestic abuse. By keeping them in school, you’re giving them the tools to build a safer, more empowered future.

👉 or in your community.

3. Educational Sponsorship ($18/month): The Most Affordable Way to Prevent Abuse

For just $18 a month, you can provide a child with the essentials they need to stay in school. This includes:

  • School fees

  • Study materials

  • A bicycle for transportation

This year alone, 8,400 children have received educational sponsorships through SSF. These children are now protected from the dangers of child labor, trafficking, and abuse—because someone like you chose to invest in their future.

👉 or .

Real Impact, Real Stories

Every sponsorship is a story of transformation. Children who once faced the threat of exploitation are now thriving in school, dreaming of becoming teachers, doctors, and community leaders. Families who once felt hopeless now have a partner in their journey toward stability.

And it’s all possible because of people like you.

How You Can Help Today

Whether you’re an individual donor, a corporate partner, or a compassionate advocate, there are many ways to get involved:

  • Sponsor a child: Choose the level of support that fits your budget.

  • Start a fundraiser: Rally your friends, family, or workplace to support a child.
