Continuing a Legacy of Compassion, Protection, and Hope
🕊️ In Loving Memory of Sao Sary
In loving memory of Sao Sary, we honor a man who was among the few Cambodians to survive one of the darkest chapters in history. Before the Khmer Rouge regime swept across the country, he had completed just Grade 7 from a public school. Then Cambodia fell into Year Zero—a time when over 3 million lives were lost in just three years and twenty days.
When the regime collapsed in 1979, the nation was broken. But Sao Sary stood up. With minimal education and unimaginable grief, he was assigned a task no human should bear: to save a starving community of 1,000 people—desperate, devastated, and on the brink of collapse. He succeeded. Through unflinching courage, he organized the burial of the dead, restored basic survival, and planted the seeds of renewal.
He brought schools to his village, advocated for children’s safety, and championed dignity in places where the future was impossible to imagine. Even as civil war smoldered through the 1980s and early ’90s—with Khmer Rouge fighters haunting villages night after night—Sao Sary carried on. His leadership protected lives in zones plagued by fighting and landmines.
But on 2 December 1997, his light was taken by assassination. The loss reverberated beyond his community, leaving a family of six children in disarray. His eldest son, just 17 at the time, became the anchor—working tirelessly to support his siblings, even as his younger sister sacrificed her education so the others could continue.
It was a story of tragedy. But also a story of redemption. Foreign supporters from Australia and New Zealand—who had worked with Sao Sary—heard of the family’s struggles and stepped in. With their help, his eldest son completed university, supported his siblings, and eventually founded the Sao Sary Foundation in loving memory of Sao Sary (his father).
Today, that same foundation continues Mr. Sary’s mission—with a vision of protection, education, and development for every child and every community.
